A Trio of Quintets at Kohl Mansion

Music at Kohl Mansion continues its 35th anniversary season with a performance this Sunday evening by members of Camerata RCO, musicians of the famed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. They’ll play three different quintets, with works by Mozart, Brahms, and Schumann. We hear about the program from Kai Christiansen, who gives the pre-concert talks for the Kohl Mansion concerts.

“They’re esteemed members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam,” Christiansen explains, “and they’re making a number of recordings, and their touring schedule is absolutely amazing. It will be their debut on the Music at Kohl Mansion stage, so we’re thrilled about that, and the program is really fascinating.” There’s Brahms Clarinet Quintet on the program, along with Mozart’s second quintet that adds a viola to a standard quartet, and an arrangement of Schumann’s Fantasiestucke for quartet and clarinet. “That’s often the case with orchestral players… they love the chance to have an intimate grouping where their parts are more naked and exposed, and a different style of music making. It’s a great alternative outlet for people who are otherwise playing Mahler symphonies.” They’ll also be on hand to give Music at Kohl Mansion’s young chamber musicians a coaching in a masterclass at 5 o’clock, with a pre-concert talk by Christiansen at 6, the concert at 7, and a post-concert reception when the audience can interact with the guest artists.
