Drums, Dance & Spirits Rising at the Ford Amphitheatre

Pop CultureArts Alive Blog

Viver Brasil has spent twenty years using Afro-Brazilian music and dance to build a bridge between Los Angeles and Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. On Friday, the company’s singers, dancers and musicians will take the stage in the Hollywood Hills at the newly renovative Ford Theatres. The performance, called “Agô Ayó – Spirits Rising”, combines samba, folkloric dances inspired by Orixás (deities found in the spiritual practice descended from Brazil’s African ancestors), choreography from Afro-Brazilian parading organizations, and a world premiere that uses music and movement to explore skin color, the African Diaspora and mixed-race ancestry.

Artistic Director Linda Yudin founded Viver Brasil with her husband, Bahian dancer and percussionist Luiz Badaró. She’s our guest this week on KUSC Arts Alive.
