We ease into the darkness with the haunting stillness of Philip Glass, William Bolcom’s Graceful Ghost Rag, and Schumann’s mysterious Ghost Variations before things take a decidedly darker turn. Along the way: Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho, Liszt’s Totentanz, Berlioz’s Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath, music from Chernobyl, Nosferatu, Star Wars, and The Nightmare Before Christmas—culminating in the full-throated force of O Fortuna.
